Spending more time with friends and family, getting friends together for a night out, and getting lots of sleep, are some of the best ways – to get over a breakup, according to Brits.

Other top tips to help newly-single adults move on include pushing themselves to try new things (72%), and focusing on themselves, rather than how their ex is feeling (33%).

And a quarter (24%), of the 2,000 adults polled, believe booking a holiday is the best medicine – while 44% consider it a waste of time to dwell on a relationship ending.

It emerged that the typical Brit has experienced three break-ups in their adult life – and 77% believe it is best to view it as a fresh start.

Meanwhile, having any sort of contact with their ex is a big no-no, for 71% of those polled. And two-thirds also believe that a breakup can ultimately move on to finding something better.

The research was commissioned by Costa Coffee, who worked with Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott, as part of the launch of its Maple Hazel drinks range this autumn.

It also emerged the worst phrases to hear during a breakup included “I’ve found someone else”, “I never loved you”, and “I’ve been unhappy for a long time”.

The old classics “it’s not you, it’s me”, and “we can still be friends”, were other phrases Brits do not want to hear during a split.

However, when moving on and dating someone new, six in ten thought a coffee shop was a great location for a first date, according to the OnePoll data – and 58% even reckon they’d pay for their date’s drink.

As autumn approaches, more than a quarter (26%) consider the season to be a good time to start afresh and move onto better things.

Sandra Ferreira, from Costa Coffee, which is encouraging people to part ways with Pumpkin Lattes in favour of their Maple Hazel drink range, said: “Breakups can be tough, but after those initial feelings of loss, it’s often the start of moving on to bigger and better things.

“A change of season can be a great opportunity to try something different.”
