A swathe of new features could be arriving on iPhones this month and upgrading won't cost a penny. Apple's latest and greatest iOS 17 software looks set to be officially released in weeks and it comes packed with changes that will make it more useful when in standby mode along with improving things such as messaging and sharing contact details.

iOS 17 was actually announced back in June and is currently being tested before it is officially pushed out to millions of iPhones.

The reason that it's almost certain to launch soon is that Apple has just confirmed its usual September iPhone launch event and the iOS 17 release will follow almost immediately after.

September 12 is the date the iPhone 15 will be shown to the world and Mirror Online predicts iOS 17 will be available on Monday, September 18.

It's an exciting release but sadly, some devices are being left off the list this year and not everyone with an iPhone currently running iOS16 will get access to iOS 17.

If you own an iPhone 8 or iPhone X you're going to need to upgrade your device to get iOS 17.

Hopefully, we'll have full confirmation of a release soon and here are some of the features included in iOS 17.

Changes in this upcoming release include Personalised Contact Posters which appear when you make a call. These can be fully customised to suit your tastes with colours and font adaptable. It basically means when you ring friends, you choose what pops up on their screen.

The Messages app is improved thanks to a less cluttered look and the addition of Check In which sends an instant text when you arrive home safely so friends know you are OK.

Then there's a new StandBy mode that makes your iPhone more useful when it's sat on your desk with clocks, photo albums and calendars displayed on the screen.
