Met Office issues more flood warnings as UK to be battered by torrential rain

A string of flood warnings and alerts have been issued after heavy rain lashed the nation with forecasters warning of more showers to come today.

The Environment Agency has issued five flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - on Friday, along parts of the Cumbrian coastline, the North Sea coast and Poole Harbour. There are also a further 46 flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - at various locations across the country.

The less severe of the alerts urges residents to prepare but those in the affected areas must, instead, "act" quickly to minimise damage and disruption. Those living near areas subject to the flood alerts should prepare a bag that includes medicines and insurance documents, and check flood warnings, the Environment Agency says. These concern large parts of Southwest England.

It's not clear how long the various warnings and alerts will stay in place but forecasts suggest cloud and rain will slowly move northeastwards across England, Wales and Northern Ireland into this morning.

In its latest forecast the Met Office has said that Brits can expect yet more rain, heavy in some regions, ahead of the weekend. Forecasters said that a few 'sharp showers are also possible, mainly across England and Wales' while temperatures will be mostly mild but chilly in parts of Scotland.

Meanwhile, Scotland and northeast England will generally stay dry with sunny spells. Feeling cool under the cloud and rain, though humid in southwest England later, the Met Office said.

The service's website added: "Further outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, across southern England and Wales. Generally cloudy elsewhere, with some showery rain at times. Turning cold under the clearest skies across northeast Scotland."
