Boy, 12, viciously mauled by pack of 10 starving pit bulls while riding his bike
A 12-year-old was mauled by a pack of 10 pit bills while riding his bike to meet a friend.
Hunter Bishop, 12, from North Carolina, was riding through his residential street when the pack of dogs pounced before trying to eat him, according to Hunter's mother, Amber Barnes. Amber said the dogs appeared hungry as they mauled her son's body while he screamed in fear.
She says she found Hunter laying in a ditch surrounded by the dogs when she first got to the scene, claiming: "They looked like they were starving. The way I looked at it, they were eating my son." Two people managed to eventually pull Hunter free before he was rushed to hospital.
Hunter was placed in a critical condition before undergoing four surgeries. He will also undergo a fifth operation on September 2 at Greenville Memorial Children's Hospital. Doctors had reportedly struggled to find enough undamaged skin to graft in order to fully close and heal his wounds.
Amber told local news that her son had been riding to a friend's house when the dogs came out of nowhere and attacked him. When Hunter failed to come home, she frantically searched for him before discovering his bloodied body on the floor. Rutherford County Sheriff's Office confirmed the attack happened along a road roughly 35 miles southeast of Asheville, reports the MailOnline.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Hunter to help with hospital bills and other expenses. The fundraising page reads: "On August 26, 2023 my son was attacked while riding his bike by at least 10 dangerous pit bulls who were loose and what looked to be malnourished. Hunter barely survived, thankfully he did. My son is a fighter! He is still in bad shape in the Greenville Memorial Children's Hospital .. he has also already been through 3 big surgeries already this week and will continue to have more due to the terrible lacerations caused by these vicious animals.
"Due to this occurring, I have not been able to work and it's been a struggle for funds getting back and forth to the hospital and other expenses . Anything helps. Thanks In advance and please keep us in your prayers." In her latest update on the page, Amber writes: "Hunter had his 4th surgery and is doing okay so far!!! he has to have another one Saturday ... please keep us in thoughts and prayers any donations are appreciated thank u!"
It is not stated what happened to the dogs following the attack and the matter remains under investigation by the sheriff's office. The local sheriff's office has spoken with the owners of the dogs but the individuals have not been publicly identified. Police are reportedly planning to meet with the district attorney to decide whether or not charges against the dog owners should be brought.
