A rescue dog dumped at an animal shelter for nearly five years is still looking for a forever home - after spending most of her life there.

Kona, who is almost six years old, was sadly given up by her owner in 2018 at an Ohio animal shelter and has failed to find a family willing to adopt her. According to the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), there hasn't been much interest in her as potential owners would need to make multiple visits in order to gain trust in her.

"She adores the volunteers that walk her daily, and she loves to go for car rides with them," the SPCA said in a post. "Once she trusts you, she is a very playful, happy girl", the shelter added. They said she would be most comfortable in a home with no small children and a fenced yard due to her demeanour.

The animal rescue group wrote on Facebook: "Kona is approaching her 5-year mark at the shelter- 5 years without a family. She adores the volunteers that walk her daily, and she loves to go for car rides with them! She is slow to warm to new people and would do best with no small children in the home.

"Because of her flighty demeanour, a fenced in yard is required in her new home. Once she trusts you, she is a very playful, happy girl. Kona would be best as the only animal in the home, she wants to have your undivided attention and love! Kona is almost 6 years old and has spent most of her life here."

The Facebook post attracted hundreds of comments from heartbroken owners who commented they wish someone could take Kona home. One user wrote: "This is sad. As now its like the shelter is her home. And the volunteers are the only family she knows." Another added: "She is beautiful. I wish I could but I live with some one who doesn’t like animals."

"So sad!! She is such a Beautiful dog!! I can’t believe she has not been adopted.. She so deserves a chance and loving home! Prayers Kona someone comes for you soon!", one dog lover replied.

The post comes after a 11-year-old boy living at his aunts house was playing with her 'therapy' dog when the pup became overwhelmed and attacked him. The brothers were playing with the dog when one of them sustained bites to the neck, face, eye and head and had to go undergo emergency surgery.

The American Bully pit mix, name Aries, couldn't handle the two boys, according to their aunt, Johanna Lopez-Ramos, who was in the bathroom when the attack occurred. "I just heard my nephew screaming and I came running out of the bathroom and I just had to react quickly to separate them,” she said.

The aunt also sustained a bite during the struggle. The young victim’s twin brother, Julian, was also in the room when the attack happened but managed to run away in time. The NYPD’s Department of Emergency Service Unit is handling the animal, according to police.
