Khloe Kardashian's son had a very unusual name - before it was legally changed

Khloe Kardashian must have been stumped when coming up with the baby name for her youngest child.

On Thursday, it was revealed that the reality television star has legally changed her son's name to Tatum Thompson after keeping her son's name a secret until season three premiere of The Kardashians.

The mother-of-two first listed the name "Baby Kardashian" on her son's birth certificate as a placeholder while she decided on the perfect name for the tot. It's unknown when Khloe decided on the name Tatum for her son, but it's now his legal name as a Los Angeles judge granted the name change from Baby Kardashian to Tatum Thompson. She shares the now 13-month-old toddler with NBA player Tristan Thompson. The duo also have a five-year-old daughter named True.

California law allows parents to decide if the child takes the mother's or father's last name or both. Whichever the parents choose becomes the permanent surname unless dictated otherwise by a court order.

It's no surprise that Khloe originally gave her baby her last name, as her and Tristan's relationship was rocky at the time. The Good American founder said she found out that Maralee Nichols filed a paternity suit against her then-boyfriend shortly after a surrogate started carrying Tatum for Khloe.

Maralee was suing Tristan for child support for her then 20-month-old son Theo whom she claimed was the athlete's, meaning he cheated on Khloe during their relationship. "It's just so close, I wouldn't want anyone to think I did this after the fact," Khloe said in an episode of The Kardashians, "Why would I wanna have a baby with someone who's having a baby with somebody else?"

Tristan later apologized on his Instagram story for cheating on the mother of two of his children. "Khloe, you don't deserve this," he wrote, "You don't deserve the heartache and humiliation I have caused you. You don't deserve the way I have treated you over the years. My actions certainly have not lined up with the way I view you."

Based on Khloe's recent Instagram posts, it seems she's found peace and happiness with the situation. She seems to be focusing on her children, recently sharing an emotional post on the social media app that her oldest, True, was starting kindergarten. She wrote in the caption: "For anyone wondering, no I’m not ok! Next it will be prom."
