Nasser Al-Khelaifi has admitted Paris Saint-Germain are "ready" to lose Kylian Mbappe - with Manchester United after the forward.

Mbappe's contract in the French capital expires next June, leaving PSG anxious of losing their biggest star. The France international, 24, is one of the biggest footballers on the planet after scoring a hat-trick in last year's World Cup final, won by Argentina.

It's believed Mbappe isn't interested in signing a new contract at PSG, putting Europe's biggest clubs on red alert. Real Madrid are the favourites to sign the prolific star, but United are expected to make their interest known when their takeover saga is completed.

The Glazers put United up for sale last November and are yet to name a preferred bidder. Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is the favourite to purchase the Premier League club, but INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still in the takeover race.

Sheikh Jassim is thought to be a huge fan of Mbappe and would love to make the superstar United's talisman. That could be possible if the PSG favourite becomes a free agent at the end of this season and the Glazers leave Old Trafford.

Yet Al-Khelaifi is doing all he can to persuade Mbappe to sign a new contract. The PSG chief has confirmed the club have held "very good discussions" with the player and his representatives, but he also insists they will be "fine" without their talisman.

"We have another 24 hours," Al-Khelaifi told RMC Sport ahead of transfer deadline day. "Kylian is a PSG player. We have very good discussions with him, he is a magnificent player, as a person and as a professional. We discussed with the rest of his family.

"We're going to work, try to do something. If we can, why not? If not, we're ready, we're fine. An extension? I don't want to talk about that."

PSG have been in this situation before. In May 2022, just a month before his previous deal was due to expire, Mbappe agreed a new two-year contract. The Frenchman was expected to join Real Madrid that summer but was persuaded to change his mind.

Al-Khelaifi would love to repeat that trick over the coming months. Mbappe is PSG's record scorer after finding the net 215 times in 262 games for the club. He joined the French giants from Monaco, initially on loan, in August 2017.

As for United's takeover, it's still unclear if and when that will be completed. United fans are hoping the Glazers will provide them with an update sooner rather than later.
