San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said he does not like Nick Bosa holding out of training camp.

The First-Team All-Pro defensive end is holding out of training camp due to ongoing issues with a contract extension. However, Lynch has spoken out and does not want the holdout to go on any longer.

"I don't like the situation," Lynch told reporters. "Since our tenure here, we haven't had a holdout anywhere towards this magnitude. Not something I'm comfortable with. We're working really hard to change that [and are] eager to bring this thing to a close."

Despite Bosa missing camp at SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, to stay at home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, there is reportedly no friction between either side during the month-long holdout. Even with missing time to gel with new teammates, Lynch and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Bosa's abilities will allow him to jump in during Week 1 and still be effective.

"I don't know if Bosa has ever done a training camp, and he has done pretty good," Shanahan said. "It's a little different when you're a defensive lineman. Everybody wants people here, and you want to do that stuff, but it doesn't affect the team as much from a defensive end standpoint.

"I have as much confidence in Nick as any player I've ever been around in terms of how he prepares and everything. I know they're going to get it right, both sides, and I'm excited for when I do see him."

Bosa is considered the best in the NFL at his position, yet is still on his rookie contract that will pay him £14 million ($17.8 million) at the end of the season. His 2023 base salary ranks second amongst defensive ends in the NFL, only behind New York Giants DE Leonard Williams, who makes £14.2 million ($18 million.)

The 25-year-old was eligible to negotiate a contract extension after last season. He and the 49ers decided to wait to sign anything until this season. After being named the NFL AP Defensive Player of the Year, Bosa has the credentials to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Regarding total contract value, the highest-paid defensive player is Khalil Mack, an outside linebacker for the LA Chargers, valued at £111 million ($141 million). His teammate and Nick's brother, Joey Bosa, follows closely behind at £107 million ($135 million). Meanwhile, Nick Bosa's total contract value places him at No. 88, earning just £26 million ($34 million.)

Players in Nick Bosa's situation can be fined up to £31k ($40k) per each practice missed according to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement but Lynch confirmed the 49ers can and will waive those fines due to his rookie contract. If Bosa continues his holdout into the regular season, Pro Football Talk has reported that the defensive All-Pro could lose £792k ($999,200) for every game missed on the schedule.
