Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite has said he is “terrified” to release his autobiography later this week which will address his “complicated” love life.
The professional baker, who shot to fame when he won Great British Bake Off in 2012, will reveal personal details of his life so far when his book Dancing on Eggshells goes on sale on Thursday.
Teasing what is to come, the 34-year-old shared a photo of himself as a child and asked his 302,000 Instagram followers: “If you could go back to your younger self and give them a piece of advice what would it be? I think mine would be; you’re going to make mistakes, but don’t let them define who you become. And the only people who matter, are the ones who’d hold your hand when you take your final breath. God, where would we be without the people we love?
“That’s what my memoir is mostly about – love, in all its’ forms. The complicated kind that leaves you winded and unable to breathe, the kind that evolves from jealousy and fear to a healthy companionship; the kind that develops with wisdom and retrospect; the kind that we embrace when we finally accept ourselves or what we are – warts and all.”
He ended the post by saying: “Dancing on Eggshells: kitchen, ballroom and the messy inbetween is out this Thursday, and I am terrified.” John’s comments come days after he revealed he had “fallen in love” with his Strictly Come Dancing partner Johannes Radebe when they appeared on the BBC dance show together back in 2021.
Strictly's Molly Rainford and Tyler West fuel romance rumours while on tourAnd just this week pictures emerged of the pair reportedly leaving an awards ceremony together in October last year holding hands, sparking rumours a romance had spilled over into real life – despite John having a fiancé he has been with for 15 years.
Opening up to The Times ahead of his upcoming autobiography being released, John admitted to cheating on fiancé Paul with “soap stars and celebrities” after shooting to fame at the age of 23.
Now in his 30s, the couple have patched things up, but John recently spoke of his affection for Strictly star Johannes, saying: “I fell in love with him. I can’t speak for him – because I’m not allowed to, legally – but it felt like there was love there. We had so much in common.
“We had some similar stories growing up – the homophobia, the bullying, coming out, coming to terms with our sexuality – as any queer kid would. And there was just a beautiful symmetry about it because it was on the other side of the earth [John is from Lancashire and Johannes is South African].”
Explaining their close connection further, John continued: “He’s black and I’m white, yet we still have that lived experience. It shows how we’re human. So, yes I fell in love with Johannes. I still love Johannes, of course I do.”
