Wayne Rooney is giving his diet an overhaul after piling on almost 3st thanks to late-night snacking.

Wife Coleen, who this week opened up about the Wagatha Christie trial in a bombshell interview with Vogue, admits the England legend had to dash to M&S to buy a court outfit after discovering his suits no longer fitted. And while she showed off a series of bikinis on a family holiday in Miami in June, Wayne kept his shirt on – even on a sun-soaked boat trip.

Sources tell how mum-of-four Coleen is now encouraging the former England and Man United star to adopt a cleaner diet after his late-night grazing habit took its toll. One says: “Wayne likes to game late into the night and has got into the habit of snacking on pizza and high-carb stuff while he does it. That has taken its toll on his waistline and now he’s heavier than he’d really like to be.

“So he’s trying to cut down on the late grazing and is trying to get on top of his weight gain by eating healthier dinners – lots of salmon, chicken and broccoli. He’s naturally a pizza, pasta and pies kind of guy and is no great lover of salad but he’s doing his best because he does want to slim down.”

Coleen, who spoke to Vogue to promote an upcoming Disney+ documentary about her legal battle with Rebekah Vardy, told how it was Wayne’s court wardrobe that caused a last-minute panic. She said: “It was the day before we were going to London and I was like, ‘Where are all your suits?’ “He was like, ‘They don’t fit me’. So I’m like, ‘S***!’ It had to be a quick fix in Marks & Spencer.”

Wayne – who now manages Major League Soccer side DC United in the US – won praise from Coleen for supporting her through the ordeal. But she admitted the stress of the court case did affect the couple. Coleen said: “He was supportive, you know, but it took its toll. He kept saying, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll be fine’. But there were certain moments where we did have disagreements.”

Coleen also went on to say how excited she is about what is “out there” for her now her youngest son Cass, five, is at school along with his three brothers Kai, Klay and Kit. Good for her. Given she’s survived the showbiz trial of the decade and come out on top, we can imagine what’s out there is… quite a lot.
