A man has been accused by his ex-wife of ruining his daughter's 16th birthday as he did not buy her a car- despite doing so for his eldest son.

The dad had given his eldest one of his cars he had in the garage, as well as some money to repair it when he turned 16. In addition, his second child was also given a motorcycle for his 16th.

However, when his daughter reached the milestone she was upset to find that no car was being given to her and, instead, she had been sent some jewellery and £400 to put towards her savings for a car.

In a Reddit post, the dad asked the forum whether he was unreasonable for not getting his daughter a car and said he did not want to set the precedent for his other kids that all of them will be getting cars when they turn 16.

He explained: "My daughter's 16th birthday was last week. I know my daughter wanted a car but I don't have a car sitting around to give her.

"I gave her £400 to put toward a car and got her some jewellery. I told her she would need to save up herself if she wanted a car."

He claimed his daughter was upset but understood the situation, while his ex-wife was fuming that he had given the boys cars and said he always prioritises them.

"She thinks I'm treating her differently because she's a girl and that I always prioritise the boys," he said.

"Apparently my daughter was more upset about the lack of car than I had thought. She thinks I should at least put more money towards our daughter getting a car as she knows I can afford it.

"I have three younger kids I can't really continue to set a precedent that I'll buy each of them a car."

In response, many sided with the daughter and said the dad was acting unreasonably.

One person wrote: "You gave your boys something worth more than £400 and some jewellery. You gave them freedom."

While another stated: "Show your daughter that you have the same respect and love for her as you do your sons. We’re talking lifelong resentment if you don’t fix this with her. Her feelings are valid."

A third penned: "You are blatantly favouring your sons. How did you expect her to feel about this?"
