Jurgen Klopp's summer transfer plans have been thrown into disarray to leave the Liverpool boss scrambling for a new midfielder before the upcoming deadline.
The Reds got their initial business done early with deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - both of whom started their opening 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Sunday. But the unexpected departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho has left Klopp light on options in the middle of the park and with some extra cash in the kitty.
That was enough to spark a pursuit of Brighton star Moises Caicedo, but despite agreeing a British record transfer fee with the Seagulls for the Ecuadorian, he has instead opted to join Chelsea. Liverpool had been hoping to beat the Blues to the signature of Southampton's Romeo Lavia but he now wants to move to Stamford Bridge instead.

Liverpool have been named as one of several clubs said to hold an interest in PSV midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.
The 25-year-old has emerged as a potential alternative for Liverpool this summer, though the Reds may face stiff competition should they choose to make a move. ESPN report that Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also linked with his signature.
Ex-Ajax, Atletico Madrid and Man City star Kiki Musampa is the brother of Sangare's agent, and has confirmed Nottingham Forest have already seen an offer turned down as it did not meet PSV's €37million (£31.8m) asking price whilst admitting big clubs were circling for the Ivorian's services.
“For those kinds of clubs, these are amounts that they can cough up," Musampa said. "Nottingham Forest did bid, but that was not enough. You want to bring him to the club that suits him and where he will have opportunities to play.”

Liverpool are yet to make an offer but could be drawn into a 'transfer duel' with their bitter rivals before the window is out.

Oxlade-Chamberlain joins Besiktas
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed for Turkish club Besiktas on a three-year deal.
The 29-year-old midfielder departed Anfield at the end of last season when his contract expired and has been looking for a club since.
Oxlade-Chamberlain joins former Everton striker Cenk Tosun at the Vodafone Stadium, as well as ex-Leicester defender Daniel Amartey and midfielder Gedson Fernandes, who had a brief loan spell at Tottenham.
