BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood left embarrassed after an awkward on-air blunder

BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood was left red-faced after her co-star Jon Kay pointed out a hilarious blunder during her recent weather report.

During Tuesday's segment of the morning show, the 61-year-old weather presenter shared a snapshot of the perfect blue skies - but there was one distracting element that left Jon in hysterics. Pointing out the element she'd failed to notice, he said: "Right, it's just after 10 to eight and you know Carol gets beautiful pictures from all over the UK from you every day that just encapsulate the weather. Well, this morning she's got a cracker, I think that's how you say it" he quipped.

Unaware of what Jon was referring to, a smiling Carol turned to the image on her screen and said: 'It is. It's beautiful. I am looking at the sky, of course, Jon. I don't know what you're looking at.' But Jon was quick to remark that he 'wasn't looking at the sky.'

However, what Carol failed to notice was that the image was somewhat spoiled by a line of portable toilets. She told Jon: 'I didn't notice that when I pulled it in, unfortunately. But it is lovely, isn't it? This is one of our weather watcher's pictures taken a wee bit earlier in John O'Groats in the Highlands."

The incident has been one of the few mishaps to unfold in the BBC Breakfast studio in recent weeks, as Sally Nugent was recently forced to correct herself when she accidentally introduced a reporter who wasn't on screen. The blunder occurred as Sally and her co-host Jon Kay discussed the weather conditions that are currently impacting farmers and their harvest up and down the country.

As Sally introduced a report that was taking place via video link, she identified reporter Jonah Fisher before realising he was not on screen.

She said: "Well the wet conditions are causing a big problem for farmers who are struggling to harvest quickly and efficiently. Our environmental correspondent Jonah Fisher is at the North Devon show for us this morning and he's already busy."

"Morning Jonah," Sally continued before correcting herself when she spotted someone tending to a sheep: "Oh, it's not him!"
