WWE star Roman Reigns possibly suffered a serious injury at SummerSlam, according to reports, despite beating Jey Uso.

The 38-year-old successfully defended his WWE Undisputed Universal championship against his cousin Uso in a ‘tribal combat’ match at Ford Field in Detriot, with the honour of being ‘tribal chief’ and the family leader also on the line. But help arrived in the form of Jey’s twin brother Jimmy, who returned and shockingly betrayed his brother and left him laying in a heap, which allowed a bemused Roman to capitalize and continue his historic three-year title reign.

But the ‘Tribal Chief’s’ latest victory appears to have come at a cost, as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter via Wrestling News shared that he suffered an injury early in the match. Where Reigns sustained the injury and the extent of it have not been disclosed, but the ‘Head of the Table’ is scheduled to be at this Friday’s episode of SmackDown.

The two cousins facing one another at SummerSlam was one of the most anticipated matches of the year after The Usos finally broke away from the Reigns’ clutches at Night of Champions in May. At Money in the Bank in July, Jey became the first person to successfully pin Reigns in three years when the Usos defeated Roman and younger brother Sola Sikoa in the ‘Bloodline Civil War’ tag team match.

Jey was more than holding his own against the mighty Reigns at SummerSlam, and may have captured his first singles title had it not been for his twin. The hard-hitting contest lasted 36 minutes, which was the longest match of Reigns’ entire career at Premium Live Events.

He is currently enjoying some down time as he posted a photo on social media relaxing on the beach with a caption that read: “Umbrella Service. And Still. The Only Tribal Chief.” In the SummerSlam post-match press conference, Reigns' manager Paul Heyman, known as the ‘wise man’ and ‘special counsel’, appeared on the grappler’s behalf and was asked about the incredible Bloodline story involving Roman, The Usos and Sikoa, all members of the famed Anoaʻi family.

It is a narrative that has played out on WWE screens since 2020, with numerous layers and plot twists that have made for compelling viewing. With many suspecting the story arc would either draw to a close or be nearing its end at SummerSlam, Heyman said there is still much more to come.

“We’re just figuring this stuff out. We haven’t even hit our stride yet," Heyman said. "If you want to take the arrogant approach, I’m sure Paul Levesque will tell you all the box office records that have been smashed. Every Friday night when we show up at SmackDown, we’re always told, ‘This is the largest gate of this and the largest gate of that.’ This is the largest premium live event. This is the largest WrestleMania.'”

He added: “Okay, we can sit there and point to what clearly drove all this, and it’s the Bloodline, and when I say the Bloodline, I mean the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns. We’re just figuring this out. There is so much more to learn. There is so much more for us to grasp. There is so much more for us to master. It’s a craft, and it’s an evolving craft.

"It’s an ever-evolving form of entertainment, and if you sit there and you think, ‘we got this, this is it, we’re cruising to WrestleMania,’ we’re going to be replaced, and we should be. What inning are we in? Bottom of the third. Wait until you see what we have in the fourth.”
