Lionel Messi’s wife has explained the latest goal celebration by her husband for Inter Miami.

Messi has enjoyed the perfect start to life as a Miami player since he signed for the club on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentina legend has scored five goals in his three appearances for the club since his arrival.

Two of his latest goals came against Orlando City in the Round of 32 stage of the Leagues Cup. Messi scored twice to help secure a 3-1 victory against their Florida rivals to reach the next stage of the competition.

After Messi scored his second goal of the evening, he celebrated by crossing his arms over his chest. And now his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, has offered an explanation behind the celebration on social media.

On her Instagram story, Roccuzzo posted a photo of Messi celebrating in the aforementioned manner. Her caption with the photo read: “De Asgard a Wakanda”, which translates to “From Asgard to Wakanda”.

This is in reference to the Marvel superhero film series "Black Panther," which featured the late actor, Chadwick Boseman, who died in August 2020. In both instalments of the films, main characters perform the same action as Messi, which has become synonymous with the franchise.

It’s not the first time that Messi’s celebration has gained attention. There was a similar reaction after appearing to celebrate in the direction of David Beckham back in July.

In what was Messi’s second game for Miami, he appeared to aim a gesture toward the club’s co-owner after scoring a goal. With Beckham watching on the sidelines, Messi celebrated with his teammates before holding out his hand in the direction of the Manchester United legend.

Miami won that game 4-0, with Messi also on the score sheet twice. His other goal for the club came in his debut against Cruz Azul, where he scored direct from a free-kick in stoppage time to win the game for his new club.

Now Messi and Miami will be preparing for their next match in the Leagues Cup. Up next is the Round of 16 clash against FC Dallas, where the winner will progress to the quarter-final.

Messi will have to wait until August 21 to make his debut in Major League Soccer. That game is against Charlotte FC, but there is still the chance to play several more in the Leagues Cup before then.
