Furious Corrie fans claim Bernie is 'bang out of order' after Sunita twist

Coronation Street fans were left unimpressed with Bernie Winter on Wednesday as she used the late Sunita to try and influence her dying son Paul Foreman. Soap fans will recall that Paul was tragically diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) earlier this year, leaving his mum Bernie devastated.

On Monday, Bernie and Paul joined the Alahan family for Sunita’s memorial dinner after she tragically died in 2013. During the meal, Asha noticed a bubble of light hovering over her in a photo she took with brother Aadi. Bernie was quick to suggest it was a human spirit orb, sparking speculation it was Sunita. However, Dev was quick to shut her down as an embarrassed Bernie left.

Later, Paul admitted to his mum that he wishes he had her belief in the afterlife, claiming it would make his diagnosis easier to deal with. Bernie then apologised to Dev for her insensitive comments but decided to meddle further as she secretly turned the picture of Aadi and Asha to face a photo of Sunita on the mantelpiece.

On Wednesday's episode, the Alahan family noticed that the picture of Aadi and Asha had moved to face Sunita, and Bernie tried to pretend that Sunita's spirit was in their home, infuriating Dev. Later, Bernie was caught red-handed by Dev moving the photo again as part of her game, leaving Dev livid as he demanded she not use Sunita’s memory as part of her game and mess with his children's minds.

Bernie insisted she wasn't "dissing Sunita" and instead was trying to get Paul to believe in the afterlife. Later, Dev explained Bernie's motives to Paul and asked if he would be prepared to go along with her belief in the afterlife as it would bring her solace. Paul then admitted to Bernie that he was willing to open his mind to the spirit world.

Soap watchers were left unimpressed with Bernie's meddling as they took to Twitter to slam the character. One person said: "Dev's right Bernie. There was no need for that #Corrie", a different account put: "Bernie is bang out of order! #Corrie" while another viewer added: "Bernie now you have gone too far with Dev that is his dead wife you do not play around with #Corrie."
