It will be Tobin's ninth run out in the franchise, with the 80 year old only missing the 2021 edition starring Chris Rock. Producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules called his return “a thrill” in a statement. They said: "His performance as John Kramer is part of the magic that made this franchise a phenomenon and his character is an active part of this film."

The franchise was first released back in 2004 and immediately gripped its audience. At the time, it grossed $103 million worldwide off a budget of just $1.2 million. Alongside Tobin in his brief appearance were Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell and Danny Glover.
