Cinemagoers were treated to a show within a show when a fight broke out at a screening of the new Barbie movie. Two women locked horns at the Odeon cinema in Maidstone, Kent, over the weekend, resulting in the film having to be restarted.

The ordeal was caught on camera and shared on TikTok by Izzy Poulter - who said the pair are understood to have been kicked out. The footage shows both women storm at each other on the screening room stairs as others watch on - some with popcorn in hand. Someone behind the camera can be heard giggling.

Most of what is said during the row is inaudible - although at one stage, one of them appears to say: "Get out of the cinema then, you're ruining it for us."

They exchange insults and things come to a head before one is hit in the face and they both retreat to their seats. It appears they were parents with their children at the screening. One witness claims the row started because one of the women believed the other's child had got into the film for free.

Asked if staff paused the film, Izzy said in the comments of her video: "Yeah, then they got kicked out I think and they started it again and we all got a refund and free ticket for another movie."

Most of the commenters were quick to see the funny side. One said: "OMG I would’ve wanted that so bad, seeing someone arguing is funny too." Another added: "The lady grabbing the popcorn gives me life."

A third said: “Only in Maidstone could this happen during the Barbie movie.” More than 120,000 people have watched the video on TikTok, with it garnering 26.5k likes. The film, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was released in the UK on Friday, July 21. It has already grossed more than $200million in the US.

An Odeon spokesman told the Mirror: “This is a police matter and we cannot comment any further at this time.”

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 6.50pm on Sunday 23 July 2023, to a report a woman had assaulted another woman at a cinema in Barker Road, Maidstone.

"The suspect left the premises following the incident and an investigation is underway into the circumstances. Witnesses and anyone with information should call the appeal line on 01622 604100, quoting reference 46/133833/23."
