Miami Marlins coach Jody Reed has suffered a serious injury after being hit by a foul ball.
The Marlins were playing the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the top of the third inning, with Reed taking up his position as third-base coach on the sidelines. Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson’s throw was hit by Marlins batter Jesus Sanchez, which went for a foul ball just wide of third base. However, the ball happened to travel exactly where Reed was standing.
The Marlins coach could not get out of the way of the ball in time, as the hit struck his lower right leg. Reed tried to walk off the injury, but it was clear further medical assessment was needed on the 60-year-old. Reed exited the game to be treated by the Marlins medical team, and did not return to the field during the game. Marlins quality-control coach Griffin Benedict took Reed’s place as the team’s third-base coach.
It was later confirmed Reed had suffered a bone fracture as a result of the impact. And Marlins manager Skip Schumaker explained how, after further assessment, it had been determined that Reed had suffered a broken leg. “I’m pretty sure he broke his leg,” Schumaker told reporters during his post-game press conference. "He had X-rays and the doctor said it was broke, so we’ll see how long he’s out for, unfortunately."
To make matters worse for Reed and co, the Marlins lost the game 6-4 to the Cardinals; their third consecutive loss in the three-game series to the NL Central team. The Cardinals scored four of their six runs in the first inning, while the Marlins had only two runs to their name before the start of the eighth inning. And Schumaker has explained why the trip to St Louis proved to be rather unenjoyable for his team.

That will be followed by a two-game series on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays, who are second in the AL East and ahead of the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees.
