Tributes were paid on Tuesday to Royal Ascot winner Reshoun after he suffered a fatal injury at Beverley.
The nine-year-old gelding was having his 45th start in a 2m handicap and was already detached from the field when he went wrong during the race and was pulled up at halfway. He was attended to by vets who were unable to save the horse who won seven times and earned more than £260,000 in prize-money.
Beverley racecourse said: "Very sad to report that despite immediate veterinary attention by our expert team of vets, we were unable to save Reshoun. Condolences to all connections of this wonderful horse."
Pundit Graham Cunningham, who was working at Beverley for Racing TV, said: “Reshoun was a shadow of his former self on his two runs this season. Today he was pulled up at halfway and that’s really bad news for an old horse who has been a formidable staying handicapper for quite a few years.
“He was a Royal Ascot winner and had plenty of other wins at big tracks over the years so that’s really sad for Reshoun and his connections.” His former trainer Ian Williams wrote on Twittter: “Really sad news today @Beverley_Races that Reshoun for Pat Morris lost his life.

Reshoun raced for most of his career in Britain for colourul owner Marwan Koukash. He ran at Royal Ascot three times, enjoying his greatest moment in 2021 when he won the Ascot Stakes by a short head at odds of 66-1.
He returned the following year to run twice over the course of the meeting, finishing fifth in the Ascot Stakes and second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.
Reshoun had joined the stable of Patrick Morris this season, finishing tailed off in the Chester Cup and was beaten 40 lengths on his other start.
