Cricket star Phil Tufnell was an expert at spinning balls, but he has only just learnt how to spin dry his smalls.

The ex-England player, 57, says he had to find out how to use the washing machine because his wife had hip replacement surgery.

Kitchen novice Phil also had to learn how to use the dishwasher and has been doing the cooking while his other half Dawn, who he calls the Duchess, recovers.

I’m a Celebrity star Phil said: “I’ve been looking after the Duchess. She had a hip replacement. And it sounds... ‘Oh, we’re just having a hip replacement’, but it really is quite brutal.

“The saws come out and the drills come out. Hammers and chisels and all sorts. But she’s on the mend, hopefully.

“I’ve learnt about a dark wash. I didn’t know what a dark wash was. You’ve got to get the temperatures right. It’s been a whole new world for me. I’ve quite enjoyed it in a funny sort of way.

“I’ve had to make three meals a day. Crikey, I haven’t even had time to think about the dusting.

“I’ve been going to bed about half eight – absolutely shattered.”

Asked how he hit the age of 57 without needing to put a washing machine on, he said: “Well, she’s a wonderful woman. She looks after me. I think she was owed me looking after her for a while.”

Phil – who has been married to third wife Dawn since 2005 – said his specialities in the kitchen consist of “anything with mince”. He told the Monday Mile podcast: “Chillies, spag bols... A thousand things with mince I can knock up.”

Phil, who won I’m a Celebrity... in 2003 and was fourth in this year’s debut series of I’m a Celebrity... South Africa featuring show legends, was a spin bowler for England and Middlesex.
