TV viewers have been left gutted after a popular Sky channel is set to be axed from the airwaves as of tonight.

Sky and Virgin have called time on classic 24-hour movie channel TCM after more than 20 years.

The channel is set to be permanently removed after more than two decades on air in the UK and Ireland.

It is known for its classic movie coverage, showing Western oldies and numerous all-time favourites like A Space Odyssey and Ocean's Eleven.

Fans have been reminiscing about the channel before it is taken off air.

Some have been getting emotional at the prospect, with one writing: "I don't understand there are far to many wasted channels which is silly TCM is a really good channel."

While another said: "You made my memories with my nan, best memories ever."

The emotional comments come after TCM revealed that the popular channel will cease to exist as of July 6.

In a Facebook post, it said: "On July 6th, we'll be riding off into the sunset one last time.

"Thank you for joining us on our journey and for loving classic movies just as much as we do."

But TCM has advised viewers to watch Quest if they want to keep watching the popular films. Quest is available on 149 and 137 on Sky and Virgin respectively.

Despite this, viewers have still been left sad that TCM will not return. One said: "My dad is in a period of mourning because the TCM channel is closing down in the UK. Where will he watch old black and white and cowboy movies?"

"Thank you for being with the UK for so many years. We will miss you," another wrote.

A third commented: "Farewell TCM Movies UK."

One in particular mentioned a letter they got from Virgin Media: "Lovely email telling me that TCM movies will be closing and no-longer available but not to worry my bill won't be impacted.

"Very considerate to take away channels but keep the price the same. Represents good value - feeling very lucky!"

The letter went on to apologise, saying: "We endeavour to bring you a wide variety of channels however these can change from time to time, as we can only air the channels we have a license and agreement to. Apologies for any disappointment."
