The landmark trial of a man accused of murdering his partner on holiday in Peru has started.

Jorge Garay allegedly killed Karla Godoy between September 21 and October 2 last year. Her body was found wrapped in blue plastic sheeting in a shallow grave in the capital Lima.

The month-long trial is taking place 6,000 miles away at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent. Garay denies murdering Karla.

The 46-year-old, of Dartford, had travelled to the South American country with Spanish-Honduran girlfriend, Karla, who was living in London.

The couple visited tourist hotspots like Machu Picchu and Lima and shared pictures of their dream trip on WhatsApp.

Karla, who has an eight-year-old daughter, reportedly last spoke to her mum on September 22.

She told her she would be flying to Spain the next day - but when her family didn't hear from her again they reported her missing.

Speaking to local media at the time of her disappearance, her devastated brother Erick said: "She has many who love and miss her. She also has an eight-year-old daughter who misses her terribly.”

It is believed to be the UK’s first case under Section 72 of the Domestic Abuse Act of 2021.

It means a person, regardless of their nationality, who is a resident of England or Wales, can be tried in the UK for an alleged offence carried out abroad.

The trial continues.
