Bakery chain closes nine shops across country - full list of stores shutting

A large bakery chain is set to shut nine of its stores - including many on busy high streets - after an "in-depth review of the business".

Cooplands, which until its takeover by EG Group in 2021 was the largest family-owned bakery in the UK, has more than 200 branches of bakeries.

But on Friday, it announced nine of these will close, including branches in Scarborough, and Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

It is another blow to struggling high streets across the UK, after recent figures showed more than 150,000 jobs were axed in 2022 alone due to the closures of businesses and branches everywhere.

Cooplands, second largest bakery chain in the UK, and only trumped by Greggs, said: "Following an in-depth review of the business, we are making some changes to both our retail and bakery operations, to help better position the business for the long-term and sustainable growth.

"This has been done to ensure that our store estate and broader business are fully aligned with our 'modern bakery food-to-go retailer' strategy.'"

Nine of its branches will soon be gone, including some which were closed previously.

Coopland has been described by reviewers as ''Britain's cheapest breakfast''.

The company currently operates three production sites in Scarborough, Durham, and Hull which make a range of baked goods and deliver them to its shops daily.
