England star Lauren James believes her difficult 2021-22 season is driving her sensational recent run of form.

James, 21, scored her first international goal in a 4-0 rout of South Korea as England made a flying start to 2023 in the Arnold Clark Cup. The Chelsea forward won the player of the match in a superb display, winning a penalty for the Lionesses' opener, scored by Georgia Stanway and also firing in the fourth on the edge of the penalty area.

After a dazzling display, England captain Leah Williamson described her as a "cheat code" after the game, while Sarina Wiegman labelled her "an outstanding talent." James is one of the WSL's in-form forwards and is now looking to secure her spot in England's starting XI.

Before the game James said her current form was partly down to her motivation after a tough time last season, where she struggled for fitness and form. "I think the frustration (from last season) gave me more hunger," she told ITV Sport. "It gave me the fight, so that I wanted to be at my best again.

"I guess when you're on the sidelines a lot. It keeps your love for the game going. I'm loving my football now. When I have freedom I think I'm playing at my best and when I'm happy off the pitch, it shows on the pitch.

"It has taken some time and I've needed to build myself up again. I've gained confidence and match fitness and finally I'm starting to feel myself again.

"It was frustrating watching last summer (England's Euros win) from the sidelines. But I guess I have just turned it into motivation and ambition. Obviously there is a World Cup this summer and I'd love to go to the World Cup.

"I don't think Reece (James, her brother) would be too happy as he just missed out! But it is something I dream of and I am working towards."

James' goal against Korea was the latest in a long line of superb finishes, including a remarkable solo goal against Tottenham in the WSL earlier this month. And the Chelsea forward was also full of praise for her club manager, Emma Hayes.

"I think she (Hayes) has been the best for me," added James. "Not just as a manager but as a person. She understands me and how to get the best out of me.

"She understands who I am and why I am the way I am."
