Manchester City kid Tommy Doyle is chasing his own treble with England U21s this summer.

The midfielder won promotion on loan at Sheffield United and is targeting a Euro championship victory with Lee Carsley’s boys. And with a good show in Georgia, Doyle hopes to be playing in the top flight for the first time next season.

He has held brief talks with the Blades over a return and will wait to see what Pep Guardiola wants him to do in pre-season. Doyle said: “I am not in a rush to move anywhere and leave City. The next step for me is to play Premier League football. Once I have done that for a year I’ll see where I am at.

“I need to have conversations with City to see what they want from me. Nothing has happened yet. With Sheffield United it was more congratulations on being here and go and win the tournament.

“The expectation is to go all the way here. It should be exciting. This season has been massive. I have played a lot, getting promotion helps, I felt a massive part of it and it was enjoyable. Now I can represent my country and try to win something again.”

Guardiola’s treble winners have been an inspiration to Doyle, and he wants a taste of the medal action starting at the U21s with Lee Carsley’s talented squad. He added: “It was special to see what City did this season.

"You want to be there and involved, but you have to respect where you are. I was 100pc focused on Sheffield United. I am a player and a fan of City. It was massive for the club, we deserved it, and at the business end they stepped up another level. It gives you inspiration to win and get in that team to enjoy success.”

Doyle looks to emulate Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri but says mucking in at Bramall Lane has also improved him.

He added: “I had a year of two training with City every day. I spent a lot of time and info off him (Pep), as well as the lads. All of them are world class. It is about taking in info and being versatile. They all help you and you try to take bits into your game.

“I admire all of them, special footballers. Kevin and Rhodri, world-class and you want to end up in their position. You can name all of them, but you create your own self.

“I learned a lot at Sheffield. It was a different style of play. Games where it suited me and we had to play, and games when it got more physical and you had to put your helmet on and get stuck in, which I don’t mind either. Getting promoted was special, with a great group of lads.”
