iPhone owners would be wise to listen to this important advice or they could face an expensive trip to the Apple Store. Britain is currently basking in a mini heatwave with the current hot weather looking set to continue throughout the month. Whilst most of us enjoy topping up the tan and burning a few sausages on the BBQ, smartphones definitely don’t like the heat.

“If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature,” Apple said in a post on its help pages.

Leave your iPhone on the sun lounger for too long and you’ll soon see a message warning you that things need to cool down before the device can be used again.

As Apple explains, “If your device exceeds a certain temperature threshold, it will present a temperature warning screen.”

The alert shows a thermometer along with a message that reads, “Temperature! Your iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it.”

With the thought of no access to TikTok or Instagram, you might be tempted to shove the device in the fridge or freezer in a bid to speed up the cooling process but this is a really bad idea that could end up being costly.

Speaking to the Washington Post, Jon-Erik Hylle from phone repair firm iFixit said: “I would not recommend putting a device into a refrigerator to cool it. Rapid cooling in a moist environment could cause condensation and short the device. Also, going from very hot to very cold in a short amount of time creates its own risks.”

Most iPhone are waterproof, but if moisture gets inside the inner workings of the device it can wreak havoc and could leave you facing an expensive repair bill.

The best advice is to place the iPhone somewhere in the shade and let its temperature slowly reduce. You can place it near a fan or on a cool floor but don't be tempted to drop it in a bucket of ice-cold water as it really won't do things a whole lot of good.

Apple also recommends switching it off as this will help speed up the process and limit any damage.

“To resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment (away from direct sunlight) and allow it to cool down.”

Once things return to normal the iPhone will spring back into life.
