PSG boss Christophe Galtier has confirmed that Lionel Messi will leave the French giants this summer.

The Argentine superstar's contract expires at the Parc des Princes this summer and it was looking highly unlikely that he would not pen fresh terms with the club. His exit has now been confirmed by manager Galtier, with Messi's final game for PSG set to take place this weekend.

Speaking in a press conference, the Frenchman said: “I had a privilege of coaching the best player in the history of football. It will be Leo’s last match at the Parc des Princes against Clermont."

Messi originally arrived at PSG in the summer of 2021 as his long and successful spell with Barcelona was brought to an end. The Catalan giants' financial woes forced him to exit before he penned a lucrative deal with the French side.

Whilst there, Messi has helped them to two Ligue 1 titles, as well as the French Super Cup. Ahead of this weekend's clash with Clermont, his record sits at 32 goals and 35 assists in 75 appearances in all competitions.

Things were not as positive for Messi this season. He initially received grief from the club's supporters after his return from the World Cup - where he helped Argentina to the title against France.

The veteran forward was then suspended from action following an unsanctioned trip to Saudi Arabia, leading supporters to protest outside of his house and the club's Paris HQ. The club's failure to put together a sustained challenge for the Champions League has not helped his cause in the French capital.

The 35-year-old now has a big decision to make regarding his future. Former club Barcelona continue to be linked with an attempt to take him back to Catalonia.

Former teammate and Barcelona boss Xavi has already confirmed that he has held talks with Messi. Speaking earlier this week, he said: "I told the president that Messi return makes sense. No doubts at all, he is perfect for our system and idea. I've the tactical plan in mind with Leo.

"It's up to Leo. I think he has to decide, it's up to him… I'm speaking with Leo, yes."

There is also interest in Messi from Saudi Arabia. Recent reports in France claimed that his entourage had accepted a €1.2billion (£1.04bn) two-year contract offer that would see the forward move to Al-Hilal.

Whilst it seems there is still work to be done on a deal, that would see Messi make the same move as his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward made a record-breaking switch to Al-Nassr following his explosive exit from Manchester United last year.

It was also suggested that there was potential interest from Premier League clubs in Messi's services, albeit he has previously stated that he would prefer retiring at Barcelona.
