A disqualified driver reached speeds of 50mph with four punctured tyres in a wild police chase over many miles in south Wales where he drove on the wrong side of the road and through red lights, a court heard.

Daniel Green, 29, became involved in a police chase through Brynmawr, Blaenau Gwent, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

When he was eventually caught by police he refused to answer questions saying he was "withdrawing from heroin".

Green was also on bail at the time of the police chase having attempted to rob cash from a man outside a supermarket.

He was seen driving a red Ford Fiesta at around 2.30am on January 13 and was pursued by officers at the scene, a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court heard.

The Fiesta failed to stop and took the wrong way around a roundabout on the A467 before driving towards the town centre. A stinger device was then deployed by police and the tyres were deflated but the pursuit continued.

Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir said Green reached speeds of 50mph in a 30mph zone with the deflated tyres and took another roundabout the wrong way towards Ebbw Vale, while also passing through traffic lights on the wrong side of the road.

Eventually the car was surrounded by police vehicles but Green drove into the driver's side of one of the cars causing minor damage, reported WalesOnline.

The Fiesta came to a stop but Green got out of the car jumped a fence into bushes but he was detained and arrested along with a female passenger.

The defendant refused to take part in an interview claiming he was "withdrawing from heroin".

The court also heard about an incident on March 27 last year when Green approached a man using the cash machine outside Asda in Cwmbran at 9pm. Having withdrawn £110 from the machine the victim felt someone grab hold of his right wrist before Green pulled the man's coat above his head and there was a scuffle involving jabs thrown by the defendant.

After getting back to his feet the victim saw the defendant but did not recognise him and as he went to approach a security guard his attacker ran from the scene but he was identified through CCTV footage. He was arrested and claimed to have no recollection of the incident as he was "off his nut".

Green, of Hillside, Blaenavon, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop, driving with no insurance, and aggravated burglary.

The court heard the defendant had appeared in court for 70 previous offences including motoring offences, assault with intent to rob, and assaulting an emergency worker.

Recorder John Philpotts sentenced Green to a total of three years imprisonment. He will serve half the sentence in custody before he is released on licence.
