Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher were left stunned after former Manchester City defender Micah Richards revealed he could spend up to £31,000 on his hair in just one year.

The ex- England star has struck up a popular partnership alongside Carragher over recent years with his entertaining outbursts and approach to punditry. He was once again given the responsibility of watching as the Champions League returned to action on Tuesday evening.

Richards represented just one prong of a strong punditry team alongside Liverpool icon Carragher and Arsenal hero Henry, with Kate Abdo hosting for American channel CBS Sports. Whilst coverage went without so much as a hitch, conversation about the on-pitch action soon ground to a halt when Richards’ hair became the topic of conversation.

Following an interview with Olivier Giroud, the group were asked who out of the Frenchman or Richards had the better hair to which the latter had a straightforward answer of himself. Carragher then chimed in with questions of the style’s upkeep.

He said: “How often do you get your hair cut?” to which Richard replied: “Three times a week.”

After it had been revealed that Richards had flown his own barber to Qatar during the World Cup, it was then detailed that each haircut costs the former Man City defender £200 - a claim that left both Carragher and Henry wide-eyed in disbelief. The Frenchman even needed another listen by saying: “What did he say?”

“When I say the most, I mean when I’m working. I’ll get a trim tomorrow for the Champions League and I’m working at the weekend so I’ll get a trim then,” Richards explained.

Carragher and Henry’s disbelief continued as the Liverpool icon continued to ridicule his colleague. “Messi hasn’t even got a goal ratio like that. So you’re going to give him £400?” he questioned.

Richards replied: “I’ve got to look sharp, you know what I mean? The line. You know when you look good, you’re able to perform.”

Host Abdo intervened by revealing just how much the 34-year-old would be investing in his look throughout a calendar year. She said: “The gallery tells me, right, the control right, they tell me if you did the maths on that - £600 per week times by 52 weeks in a year.

“Okay still let’s halve it, that’s £31,000 a year right. Let’s say it’s half of that, £15,000.”

Richards attempted to cool the conversation and instead asked how much Abdo’s outfit cost in order to take the heat off of himself. Carragher wasn’t having it though and instead turned attention to his colleague’s extravagant suit to which Richard simply replied: “Let’s not go there.”
