Robert Lewandowski has made it clear to the Barcelona bosses that he wants to play with Lionel Messi at the Spanish club.

The Argentine's future beyond this summer is unclear after it was confirmed that he would not be remaining at PSG, where he has spent the last two seasons. Financial complications in 2021 meant Messi couldn't remain in Barcelona and he opted for a switch to Paris after a tearful farewell.

Now though a return could be on the cards, although the World Cup winner is not short of options. Barcelona have regained their LaLiga crown after a summer of heavy investment, with Lewandowski perhaps their most crucial addition. Now though the Pole wants the club's hierarchy to bring Messi back to the Nou Camp.

He has told Meczyki : “I want to play with Messi here in Barcelona. He has changed his style in recent years. It is easier to play with players who understand football as deeply as he does."

He also added: “Messi’s playing style has evolved in recent years. He thinks differently, and positions himself differently on the pitch. He has a unique sense. We would definitely use it. Where will I put it on the pitch? You’ll have to ask Xavi about that.”

Xavi played with Messi for a decade with the pair crucial to the success achieved, especially under Pep Guardiola, when the Catalans earned their reputation as arguably the best team in history. The Spaniard admits he would welcome the Argentine back with open arms - but accepts there are several hurdles.

He said previously: “It will depend on many things. We are obviously at the mercy of financial fairplay. But I think what it will depend on most is the wishes of Leo. He knows this is his home, that the doors are open, and that we would be delighted to have him.”

There has been contact from Saudi Arabia, where Messi's long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo moved to in January. Any switch to the Middle East would be hugely lucrative, but the 35-year-old is still producing high-class performances and could more than contribute in Europe.

Barcelona would appear his most likely destination if he were to remain on the continent. The Catalans continue to be somewhat hampered by financial restrictions, but could be able to rejig their squad to accommodate the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The MLS is another prospect for Messi, who has talked about playing in America before his career concludes. David Beckham's Inter Miami franchise would be keen on adding the Argentine with manager Phil Neville speaking openly about adding the legendary figure.
