Jamie Carragher joked that he would pass on Kasper Schmeichel's criticism of pundits to Gary Neville as he defended goalkeepers.

The former Leicester No 1 was in the Sky Sports studio offering his opinion and took issue with the commentary and analysis regarding goalkeepers - which often come from those who've never stood in between the posts. Carragher and Neville are regular contributors and have been critical of shotstoppers in the past.

Schmeichel took particular issue with those who highlight goalkeepers when they use the "wrong hand" to save a shot, citing it as "complete and utter rubbish" - with Carragher quick to pass the buck to his colleague.

The former Leicester No 1 said on the criticism: "Wrong people. I don’t know [what they mean], absolute complete and utter rubbish. It’s quite simple, you reach that way or you reach that way - which hand’s further? It’s the upper hand. I’ve never understood it, I think it’s an outdated, quite uneducated way of looking at it."

When Carragher signalled his intent to pass on the criticism to Neville, Schmeichel responded: "Please do. I think the thing about these kind of comments is they’re things we work on every single day and to have throwaway comments from someone who hasn’t actually stood in the goal, it’s quite derogatory sometimes.

"I’m looking at the next generation of ‘keepers and the way ‘keepers are talked about on TV, like yourself [Jamie Carragher] sometimes, it’s very negative sometimes. You can’t really catch a break. I’m thinking about the next generation, who would actually want to be in goal with the level of scrutiny? Because you never actually can do anything wrong."

Neville has confessed that once in his time as a pundit he went too far - and that was when criticising Liverpool's Loris Karius. The German copped criticism for his role in a defeat at Bournemouth, but later responded, as did Jurgen Klopp. Neville admits, with hindsight, that he was overly harsh.

"I think I have overstepped the mark once in punditry when I have attacked a player that was above and beyond what I should have done as an ex-pro, a coach and an owner," he told the Daily Mail. "I think I am a respectable human being. I thought I went too far on Karius. I said Liverpool would never win the league with him.

"He criticised me after and so did Jurgen Klopp. No problem. I look back now and think I criticised the lad too much for his age, his position. I actually think I was right. They signed Alisson and [Virgil] van Dijk and won it [the Premier League ]. But that doesn't mean I should have done it."
