Snow on the way in new radar maps and could fall in the UK 'within days'
Snow could fall in the UK within days, according to new weather maps.
Radar data from WXCharts shows a large weather front moving in from the northwest next Tuesday, bringing with it both wet and wintry showers over the course of the following 48 hours.
Much of this initial snowfall is expected to arrive in northern parts of Scotland, with the focus shifting down towards the north of England and Wales as the week progresses.
Up to 2cm of snow is anticipated to fall per hour in the most affected places.
Flurries over the English channel next Thursday may also affect some southern areas, especially those on the coast.
Gales, snow and rain to batter country today with 80mph wind gustsThe Met Office's latest long-range forecast also predicts a new round of wintry weather as temperatures drop towards the start of next week.
The outlook for Monday 6 Feb to Wednesday 15 Feb reads: "For many, there should be plenty of mostly dry if rather cold weather, likely lasting a few days, with overnight frost and perhaps some fog patches in the south and a small chance of very cold conditions and snow showers moving in from the east."
Cloudy and occasionally wet weather will continue to dominate across large swathes of the country in the meantime, while conditions are expected to be mostly mild.
Flood alerts remain in force for several locations in England and Scotland on Thursday as a result of recent heavy rainfall.
Many of these are due to high groundwater levels, with residents in some areas advised that their cellars may be at risk of flooding should further rainfall occur.
