Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi have come under fire from fans after sharing a cheeky kiss while at the 2023 BRIT Awards.
Footage has circulated online of the two lads putting their arms around each other and kissing smack on the lips while stunned onlookers gasped and cheered at the awards ceremony held inside London's O2 arena..
But the apparent moment of bromance between 29-year-old Harry and 26-year-old singing Scot Lewis has not been warmly received by the Twitterati.
The boys are now under fire from some sections of the online sphere as fans fear the duo are ‘queerbaiting’ by getting affectionate while not being part of the LGBTQ+ section of society.
One unimpressed fan reacted to footage on Twitter to exclaim: “we are tired of this queerbaiter” - 'queerbaiting' being a term frequently used to explain a person or character that suggests but never confirms if they are 'queer'.
Ashton Kutcher apologises to Harry Styles for 'acting a jerk' at karaoke partyAnother tweeted: “Enough queerbaiting!!!”
And another simply tweeted: “We are tired”.
And an even less impressed fan wrote online: “Every time I think of stanning him he does s**t like this.”
In recent weeks, Harry has been under fire - and defended - over accusations he tried to appeal to the LGBTQ+ community by nefarious means.
Matty Healy of the 1975 accused the star of getting a “pass” in relation to “queerbaiting” but that he didn’t understand why.
Speaking on The Adam Friedland Show podcast, Matty said: “I don’t think the gays really like it. I think it’s young girls who think it’s a new thing who are like ‘Oh my God’.”
However, Matty and Adam both came under fire for their comments - which also included them suggesting Harry: “got the N-word pass from the gay community.”
The tables appear to have turned this weekend, however, as a growing backlash has emerged online over Harry and Lewis’s kiss.
While Lewis has been quite vocal about his own sex life - claiming he has signed up to Only Fans, and boasting about his sex life on stage, Harry has been quite coy about his romantic life in the past.
Rumours have circulated about his sexuality in the past, but the musician has - as is his right - refused to be drawn into a deep discussion about his preferences.
Harry Styles wows fans with low cut glittery jumpsuit on Grammys red carpetHe told Rolling Stone last year: “I think everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it.
In the same interview, he discussed playing a gay character in the film My Policeman.
He said: “It's not like 'This is a gay story about these guys being gay.' It’s about love and about wasted time to me.”
He previously told The Guardian in 2019: “It’s not like I’m sitting on an answer, and protecting it, and holding it back. It’s not a case of: I’m not telling you cos I don’t want to tell you. It’s not: ooh this is mine and it’s not yours.
“It’s: who cares? Does that make sense? It’s just: who cares?”
