King Charles' Coronation invitations' incredible hidden detail in floral design

The invitations for King Charles' Coronation have been revealed - and they are nothing short of colourful.

They have been designed by heraldic artist and illustrator Andrew Jamieson and feature a range of flowers, foliage, wildlife and Charles and Queen Camilla's coats of arms.

The invitations instruct the addressees to attend the historic event in Westminster Abbey on May 6 - and state at the top "The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla."

They add: "By command of the King the Earl Marshal is directed to invite" followed by a space for the name and then: "to be present at the Abbey Church of Westminster on the 6th day of May 2023."

And it appears there is an incredible hidden detail contained in the invitation design - and it is very fitting for the current monarch.

That's because the flowers that appear in the design all appear in groups of three - signifying that Charles is the third monarch to rule under this name.

Meanwhile the title Queen Camilla is used for the first time in an official capacity on the invitations.

Camilla had been referred to as Queen Consort since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, but is named as Queen Camilla alongside King Charles III on the invites due to be sent to more than 2,000 guests.

The move marks the incredible journey of Camilla over more than five decades, from romantic involvement, to mistress and finally wife of the King – and will end with her formally being crowned Queen alongside the new King.

Meanwhile, the original artwork of the invitation was hand-painted in watercolour and gouache, an opaque type of paint.

The design, which recalls the Coronation Emblem, will be reproduced and printed on recycled card, with gold foil detailing.

Also central to the design is the motif of the Green Man, an ancient figure from British folklore, symbolic of spring and rebirth, to celebrate the new reign.

The shape of the Green Man crowned in natural foliage, is formed of leaves of oak, ivy and hawthorn, and the emblematic flowers of the United Kingdom.

The British wildflower meadow bordering the invitation features lily of the valley, cornflowers, wild strawberries, dog roses, bluebells, and a sprig of rosemary for remembrance, together with wildlife including a bee, a butterfly, a ladybird, a wren and a robin.

A lion, a unicorn and a boar – taken from the coats of arms of Their Majesties – can be seen amongst the flowers.

News of the invitations come as it has also been revealed what special role Prince George is set to play at his grandfather's Coronation.

It has been confirmed that George will be a page for the King, alongside older boys Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, Master Nicholas Barclay and Master Ralph Tollemache..

Meanwhile, Camilla will have her three grandsons Gus and Louis Lopes and Freddy Parker Bowles as her pages alongside her great-nephew Arthur Elliot. The Pages will form part of the procession through the Nave of Westminster Abbey.
