James Corden is getting ready to pack his bags Stateside and return to Blighty, but admits the thought of quitting The Late Late Show is "absolutely terrifying".

The presenter, 44, has sat in the hot seat of one of the US' most popular late-night talk shows for eight years but has decided it's time for pastures new.

Corden has interviewed some of the world's biggest stars on the show but will make his final appearance at the end of April.

He decided to make the change to move his family back to his native UK and to focus on his previous love of theatre.

However, he admits his imminent departure is leaving him on "unstable ground" and making him anxious.

Talking at a PaleyFest event in Los Angeles, the actor-turned-presented said: "I haven't felt this scared since I decided to take the show, to move here. I haven't felt on such unstable ground... (But) I have to embrace that fear...

"I'm just aware that what I'm trying to do isn't the road that's often travelled.

"To go from like National Theatre, writing a TV show on the BBC, Broadway, host of a late-night talk show, shooting stuff in the middle of that, stopping the late-night talk show and then going, 'Oh, I'd like to do another play now.'

"It just isn't the road that's been travelled to my knowledge, so with that comes a huge amount of fear. It's terrifying, it's absolutely terrifying."

He revealed he has a lot of ambitions still after he leaves the show, but thinks he will first take a break from the fast-paced working life he's become accustomed to.

And despite his fears of stepping away from the show, he's in no doubt the time is right.

"I'm so certain it's the right thing to do," he added. "I'm so absolutely certain that we did everything we wanted to do and I think it's really important to have things end."

He first announced he was quitting the show in April last year, citing he wanted to spend more time with his family as the reason behind his decision.

The last episode with Corden as host will air on CBS on April 27.
