Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were back in Wrexham over the weekend to witness a record-breaking occasion - and the owners are both "choked up" following the success.
It was a huge weekend for Wrexham AFC, as former Premier League star Ben Foster made his second debut for the club before the women's side played their final game of the season. Foster kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win against York City on Saturday, and the men's side are now just seven games away from potential National League title success.
The women's side had already wrapped up their league title, but set a new Welsh women's record at The Racecourse Ground on Sunday for total attendance. 9,511 people showed up to watch Wrexham Women beat Connah's Quay Nomads 2-1 and lift the Genero Adran North title, and Reynolds and McElhenney have expressed their emotion.
As per usual, the two owners were in attendance for what was a statement weekend for the football club. The men's side secured three points as they close in on National League success, and the women's side wrapped up a near-perfect season.
Reynolds and McElhenney delivered an emotional post-game interview with Wrexham Women's star Rosie Hughes on Sunday after their 2-1 win, but have also taken to Twitter to share their appreciation. On Monday, Reynolds tweeted: "Two days of Wrexham football. Nearly 20,000 people passed through the gates to see @Wrexham_AFC win — but the main event; Wrexham AFC Women winning it all and hoisting the big trophy.
Chelsea complete record-breaking Enzo Fernandez transfer after deadline day rush"These women played their guts out - and Rob McElhenney and I couldn’t be prouder or more choked up." The women's side had already won the title, but finished their season in style with a 2-1 win on Sunday after Hughes netted a late winner.
Hughes was being interviewed after the game before being suddenly joined by the Wrexham owners, who congratulated her and gave their thoughts on the occasion. "I can't imagine how she's feeling, it hit us, hit us pretty hard," Reynolds said.
"I had three little girls watching today of my own. They're really inspired, they love you (Hughes) and they love what you're doing and they're so proud of you like we are, and this is just incredible."
Hughes continued to reflect on the weight of their achievement, as she said: "I can't imagine that it's just happened to us, it won't set in until later on. We've just won, and scored in 12 out of 12 league games, I think it's the first time any team has done that, I'm so proud of the whole team."
