M&S shopper fuming after buying headless Colin the Caterpillar cake

A woman was left bitterly disappointed after purchasing a headless Colin the Caterpillar cake from M&S, and has since declared that "Cuthbert wouldn't let me down like this". Daniella Bourne-McCourt treated herself to one of the iconic caterpillar-shaped swiss rolls at her local store, but was left seething after getting home and having a closer look at it.

After opening the box, Daniella was dismayed to realise that Colin was without his head, with his tasty white chocolate face and button eyes nowhere to be seen.

Everything else appeared to be in order, from Colin's six white chocolate feet to the 15 milk chocolate sweets dotted along the length of his back, but Daniella was still pretty miffed, to say the least.

Taking to Twitter, Daniella, who bought the cake from Marks and Spencer in Crawley, West Sussex on March 16, fumed: "Pretty miffed to find my Colin has lost his head. Must have been a wild night in the Crawley store. His face is the best bit as well."

Making reference to Aldi's competitor cake, she added: "I'm sure that Cuthbert wouldn't let me down like this."

Back in April 2021, M&S started legal action against Aldi, arguing that the discount supermarket's Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake was an infringement on its Colin the Caterpillar trademark. Last February, it was confirmed that the two supermarkets had reached a private settlement.

Fellow Twitter users were soon chuckling away at the mysterious mishap, which proved ripe for pun-filled gags.

One amused person joked that 'his head Crawleyed away', while another agreed that 'it had creepy Crawleyed away'.

Meanwhile, a third person declared: "All the caterpillar cakes need to unite against this tragedy."

Responding to Daniella's now-viral tweet, an M&S spokesperson wrote: "Oh dear Daniella, it is the best bit so I can appreciate your disappointment.

"Please send us a DM with your full name, email address, and postcode so we can help."

Joining in with the fun, an Aldi spokesperson stated: "Marks and Spencer, before. you even ask we've got an alibi."
