Cristian Romero has aimed a sly dig at Antonio Conte, with the Italian seemingly set to leave his role as Tottenham manager this week.

Spurs have endured a disappointing season, being knocked out of the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League. They also have no hope of winning the Premier League title, with their trophy drought extending to a 15th year.

Conte had been brought in as a serial winner, but his reign is now falling apart after a furious 10-minute rant following the weekend's draw at struggling Southampton. In the aftermath of that result, Romero has flown out to Argentina to link up with his national team squad.

La Albiceleste take on Panama and Curacao in friendlies in their first games since winning the World Cup. Romero played a key part in winning that trophy and has unsurprisingly been named in the squad for the upcoming international break.

The defender could not resist making a sly dig towards Conte and Tottenham as he arrived for duty in South America though. On his Instagram story, Romero posted a collage of himself arriving at Argentina's training base.

As the caption, he wrote: "Que lindo estar de vuelta @afaseleccion donde realmente se disfruta." When translated to English, it reads: "How nice to be back @afaseleccion where you really enjoy."

Earlier this week, Romero had appeared to take aim at Conte for his furious blasting of the Spurs squad. The Argentine jumped to the defence of his team-mates, insisting that they would "get up and try again" after the disappointing draw at St Mary's.

"There are many things to improve, but we will not get tired of trying, we will get up and try again. I love the players of my team, I love them and my club," Romero wrote on Instagram.

"I know that we are going to move forward and the time and work of all together will tell us where we will go. I’ve been here for a short time, but we’re going to be together to achieve important things, more years may pass but we’ll try."

While Romero has insisted he will be at Tottenham for many more years to come, Conte appears to be heading for the exit door. Reports on Monday night claimed that the Italian will be sacked by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy this week.

Levy is mulling over his decision, but many close to him arguing the situation is beyond repair after Conte's latest rant. The Italian is set to be fired, with Ryan Mason promoted to interim manager for the rest of the season.

Conte has already held discussions with Levy, claiming his rant was aimed purely at the players. That argument is widely seen as being unconvincing though, with the Italian refusing to backtrack on his comments, further fracturing his relationship with the dressing room.
