A British dad-of-two died just hours after excitedly calling his family during his first holiday abroad in Spain.

Dion, who was holidaying with his girlfriend Leanne, was said to be over-the-moon about his first holiday in the European country, having missed out on a trip there a year prior because his passport didn't arrive in time.

Less than 24 hours before his tragic death, he had spoken to his dad to share "how wonderfully warm it was".

Before the end of the day, Dion had fallen from a balcony and died as a result of his injuries.

In the days since, his friends have paid tribute to an "absolutely sound and amazing bloke".

His cousin Naomi has set up a fundraiser to help repatriate his body and to support his devastated partner Leanne.

The GoFundMe reads: "The family have since discovered that, due to an oversight, there wasn't any travel insurance in place. This means that bringing Dion home has been made extremely difficult.

"Dion had settled into a wonderful life with Leanne and her two girls, and loved spending as much time as he could with his two adorable children.

"They had some great times on their visits and are really going to miss their Dad."

Dion is not the first Brit to die tragically as a result of a balcony fall while on holiday.

In May last year, a tourist died in Magaluf after plummetting from a seventh floor hotel room balcony.

A British tourist has died in Magaluf after reportedly falling off a balcony on the seventh floor of the four-star Melia South Beach Hotel on Notari Alemany, Calvià.

The man was 33 and was staying at the hotel with a family member, it is understood.

Reports suggest the man might have been trying to balance on the rails of the hotel and slipped, before falling almost 50ft.

A few months later in September, a young Brit met the same fate on the party island of Ibiza.

The 24-year-woman was declared dead at the scene of the drama, which occurred around 9 am at the Rosamar Hotel near the party resort of San Antonio.

Her unnamed partner is understood to have been with her at the time and he reportedly told police she had fallen around 30 feet from a balcony.

No one from the hotel is able to give further information, as a receptionist at the hotel said he was under orders not to say anything.
