A bomb scare onboard a Ryanair flight led to the plane being evacuated as police scrambled to the airport.

All of the 190 passengers and crew were rushed off the craft and are currently safe at the Falcone e Borsellino airport, in Sicily.

The alarm was triggered as the plane came into land and police, along with firefighters and bomb experts, raced to the scene where they reportedly checked the plane and all of its luggage.

For a time, the entire airport airspace was shut down, as other flights due to land between 8.30pm-9pm local time were diverted to another airport on the island.

But since then it has been reopened as the bomb alarm was cleared.

Local media reported that the flight departed from Pisa and three other flights heading to Sicily from Milan, Florence and Budapest were diverted during the scare to Sicily's other major airport, Catania-Fontanarossa.

They added that the concern was centred around a suspicious suitcase but no devices were found on the plane after two hours of searching.

The company that manages the Falcone e Borsellino airport tweeted that: "The following flights were diverted to Catania airport: VY6922/6923 FLR/PMO/FLR 20:55 to 21:40; AZ1793/1790 LIN/PMO/LIN 20.35 - 21.20 FR2020/2021 BUD/PMO/BUD 20.50 - 21.15".

Ryanair have been approached for comment.
