Eddie Howe has taken a swipe at a suggestion by Liverpool chief John W Henry that Premier League spending should be limited.
Newcastle are at the start of their rebuilding under the Saudi Arabian national wealth fund, and have forked out £250 on new players in the last three transfer windows. Henry said this week that “ there should be limits on spending so that the league doesn’t go the way of European leagues where one of two clubs annually have little competition.”
Manchester City and Liverpool have fought for the title between themselves for the last four seasons. Newcastle are now a force because of their spending power, which is also restricted by FFP rules.
Howe is in the market for four or five new players this summer as new sponsorship deals kick in at St James’ Park. When told about Henry’s comments, Howe said: “I wouldn't want to see any more restrictions on spending. We have spent money - don't get me wrong - but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to."
Newcastle fear a move by the established elite to hamper their relaunch. Howe’s side are faltering in their pursuit of a top four finish this season with three defeats in a row and no win in five games.

He is facing a dilemma over who to play up front to break a five hour goal drought. Howe admits record £60m buy Alexander Isak is not fit to play 90 minutes yet, eight months after joining.
But he says Isak is versatile and will come good. Asked when he will start a game, Howe said: “Alex will decide that by how he performs. He did very well when he came on last week and has trained well this week.

“He wants to play, like every player. I’ve not had huge conversations about his game-time, it’s been about keeping him fit after his serious injury and building his confidence levels and training levels, to the level he can play at.
“I feel he is there, but is he 100 per cent ready to play 90 minutes on a consistent basis? Probably not. I have been delighted by his attitude. I think he’s in a good place.
“He’s in a great moment now to hopefully push on and really show all his qualities which when you’re behind the scenes and you’re seeing it every day, let me tell you, he’s an outstanding talent and we’re absolutely delighted he’s here and we know that we’ve got a great player for the future.”
