Rio Ferdinand blasted Tottenham’s performance in their Champions League exit to Milan as “embarrassing” and believes the players will be full of regrets in the dressing room.

Spurs meekly exited Europe’s premier club competition with a whimper in a scoreless draw at home to the Italian champions. It followed their narrow one-goal defeat in Milan last month as they were eliminated without much of a fight.

The club’s supporters aired their discontent at the end of the match with a series of boos. Cristian Romero was dismissed in the second half and spare a late Harry Kane header from a set piece, they rarely threatened the visitor’s goal.

It ended a miserable seven days for the club, coming in the wake of their embarrassing FA Cup exit in the Fifth Round against a rotated Championship side in Sheffield United and their Premier League loss against Wolves on Saturday.

BT Sport pundit Ferdinand did not hold back in his criticism of Spurs' performance after the match, using a string of adjectives to describe the limpness of their showing and their inability to rise to the occasion against a well-organised Milan side.

“From a Spurs point of view, you have to say embarrassing,” Ferdinand blasted on BT Sport after the match. “No spark, no urgency, lacklustre at times. Dower, drab, I don’t know how many more words I can find to describe the performance today.

“We asked at half-time and before the game for these players to out there and give these fans something to get behind them, which you need in these knockout phases in these big games, and they’ve done nothing.

“There was no fight and no spirit in that team and they’ll be going back into that changing room and thinking we all could have done more, individually, but as a team as well. The manager will have expected much from that as well.”

Ferdinand added: “These games you don’t even need to give team talks, the stature of these games and what’s at stake, you go out there and you give it you all, you perform, so the last thing you want as any player at any is where you feel you could have done more, and that’s how they’ll be leaving this stadium.”
