The owner of a tanning shop is "truly disgusted" after finding a customer had urinated on a sunbed during a session only lasting six minutes.

Odelle Burney said after the client left The Tanning Room in Lees, Greater Manchester, the discovery was made, and she revealed it is the fifth such incident in 10 years running the salon.

She said a staff member was going to use the same bed at the end of their shift before noticing the distinctive wet patch.

The employee "ended up slipping on the mat because it was so wet" and then "started to notice the smell", Odelle added.

The business owner said not only is the practice of relieving yourself on a sunbed unhygienic, it is also dangerous due to high voltage present.

Odelle wasn't working on the day but had to come in to help with the deep clean.

She said the customer is not a regular but if she comes back she will bar her.

Odelle posted about the "truly disgusting" incident on the tanning salon's social media account.

She told Manchester Evening News: “It’s crazy, I don't know what it is but it appears to be quite a common thing in sunbed shops.

“Maybe it’s just from people coming in from the cold and then the heat hits them and they can’t control their bladder, but it’s definitely not the first time it’s happened - we've had about five incidents in ten years.

“The customer just scuffled nicely out of the shop and that was that,” Odelle continued.

“A member of staff had just finished their shift and went on the bed after her.

"She put her tokens in, opened the bed’s door and then ended up slipping on the mat because it was so wet. Then she started to notice the smell and lifted the mat up to discover what had happened."

"To wee on a sunbed with the electricity and high voltage is pretty crazy to me - why do people think it’s acceptable to do that?

"We have a staff toilet and we'll let customers use it for medical reasons or if there's an emergency, but we’re also opposite a library that has a public toilet. It's not like there weren't any options."

Odelle went on to say: “We had to throw away all the internal and external mats and give it a deep clean and sanitise everything.

“We’ve had to order new mats and had to shut the room for at least half an hour, so we lost out on money having to close that.

“I could do without this, to be honest with you. It’s one extra thing we've have to deal with.”

Odelle said she knows who the customer is because the salon has CCTV cameras in the reception area which shows people going in and out of the cubicles. She said she has had to ban them from coming in again.

“We do have CCTV but we do not have cameras inside the cubicles at all,” she added. “We just monitor the entrances and everyone coming in and out.

“They’re not a regular customer. Obviously, if she comes back in again, I’m going to have to pull her to one side and bar her.

"I kind of hope she doesn’t come back as it avoids me the embarrassment of having to do that.”
