Person killed in shooting involving US immigration agents in Maine

A person has been killed in a shooting involving US immigration agents just days ⁠after a federal agent fatally shot a Mexican immigrant, according to reports.

News of the shooting in Biddeford, Maine, which is said to have occurred at 7.20am on Monday, was revealed by the state’s lawmaker.

‘This morning a shooting occurred in Biddeford,’ Ryan Fecteau, Maine’s state house speaker, said in a post on Facebook.

‘A person was killed. ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] was involved. State ‌Police and the ‌Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather ‌details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well.

‘These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me.’

Biddeford police told CNN that there was a ‘police incident’ in the area, roughly 18 miles south of Portland.

It also said there is no threat to the public at this time, but declined to provide additional details.

Former Maine state senator Troy Jackson also said on X that he had ‘been alerted to the fatal ICE shooting in Biddeford’.

‘Our team is monitoring this situation very closely and will [provide] updates as we learn more,’ Jackson wrote.

‘My heart is with Biddeford – and with all Mainers.’

Jackson added in a follow-up post, in part: ‘Our immigrant communities are under attack by ICE.’

This comes after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was described as a ‘hard worker’ and family man, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Houston last week.

Araujo is allegedly undocumented and didn’t follow commands. ICE has claimed that Araujo attempted to ‘weaponise his vehicle’ and run over an officer – the same reason the agency gave for shooting Renee Good in January this year.

The agency said officers fired in ‘self-defence’, but his family don’t believe this to be the case.

His son, Ronaldo Salgado, said: ‘He did not deserve to die. He did not deserve to be reduced to a headline of ‘Mexican man shot and killed by ICE.

‘He dedicated his life in the United States to giving his family the American dream. He raised my brothers and me on the idea of education taking us so far in life.

‘I am deeply heartbroken to see that the man who taught me the value of hard work, family values, and education will no longer spend an evening on his porch.’
