Former Southampton player Jan Bednarek and his family experienced a terrifying robbery in their Portuguese home.

An intruder armed with a knife reportedly threatened the Polish international before fleeing with €150,000 (£130k) in jewellery.

The crime occurred around 9:30 pm yesterday according to Portuguese press when the centre-back surprised the burglar as he returned from a restaurant with his wife Julia and daughter.

The 30-year-old and his loved ones were not harmed.

Portugal’s PSP police were initially called out and have now handed over the investigation to the Policia Judiciaria for the incident at the family home in Porto.

Bednarek, now playing for Porto, who have just won their 31st league title, has yet to comment on social media.

Julia, who married the footballer in June 2022 after a one-year engagement, posted footage of the couple visiting a contemporary art gallery hours before the robbery. She has also not yet commented on last night’s drama.

Bednarek joined Southampton on a five-year deal for a fee of £5 million in July 2017, making his debut against Wolves in August of that year in the EFL Cup.

He was loaned to Aston Villa in September 2022 before being recalled to Southampton earlier than expected in January 2023 after making just three Premier League appearances.

During his time at his loan club, he opened up about mental health struggles.

He left Saints supporters upset with his first words as a Villa player following his deadline day move after saying he was “happy and excited” to be moving to a “bigger club.”

He joined Porto in July last year after eight seasons with his previous club.
At the international level, he has participated in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as two European Championships.
