Horrified onlookers watched as a ’distressed’ man scaled a power pylon carrying high-voltage cables.

The man, understood to be upset over a relationship, scaled the pylon in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, on Sunday morning.

The man climbed the pylon carrying high-voltage cables close to Sainsbury’s in the town centre. Witnesses looked on in shock as he climbed almost to the top.

Emergency services including ambulance crews, West Yorkshire Police and firefighters raced to the scene. Power cuts were reported across Brighouse and in Lightcliffe, Hove Edge and surrounding areas.

Thousands of homes were left without electricity, reports Yorkshire Live.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed they had been alerted by West Yorkshire Police at 9:23 am this morning. The ambulance service dispatched three Hazard Area Response Teams and two area commanders.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to the site of an electricity pylon close to Brighouse Marina at 9:15 am today following reports of concern for the safety of a man who had reportedly climbed up the structure.

"The man climbed down the pylon shortly after 11:30 am and was arrested. He is not thought to have suffered any injuries during the incident."
