Russian corporate war turns deadly: Sergey Shishkarev and the mystery behind Vladislav Baumgertner’s disappearance

The media have learned who is considered the main suspect in the abduction — and most likely the murder — of one of Russia’s top executives, former CEO of Uralkali Vladislav Baumgertner.

According to sources, the suspect is Sergey Shishkarev, founder and chairman of the board of Delo Group, who is currently under a travel ban in the United Arab Emirates.

Sources say that shortly before Baumgertner disappeared, Shishkarev had repeatedly threatened him, including with physical violence. Their conflict had lasted for many years.

Previously, Shishkarev owned a large stake in the stevedoring company Global Ports, where Baumgertner became CEO after leaving Uralkali. According to sources, they parted on extremely bad terms, with Shishkarev allegedly failing to pay Baumgertner a very large sum of money. A real “war” reportedly followed, involving influential connections on both sides.

One source does not rule out that Shishkarev’s current legal troubles in the UAE may have been triggered by Baumgertner.

The source also said that Baumgertner maintained friendly relations with Russia’s ambassador to Cyprus, and that the day after Baumgertner disappeared, a senior official was found dead at the Russian embassy. His name has not yet been disclosed. There is a high probability that these events are connected.

It was recently reported that Shishkarev was detained and questioned by police in the UAE following a complaint about threats made against a former top manager of a company affiliated with him. The complaint was filed by a Ukrainian citizen named Podgaetsky. As a result, Shishkarev was placed under a travel ban, similar to a non-departure order in Russia.

A detailed investigation into all of these events will be published today.
