Russia’s ‘largest business event’ degenerates into self-help circus under Alfa Bank branding
Marketed as Russia’s largest event for business and entrepreneurs, Alfa-Conf, organised by Alfa Bank, instead exposed the hollow state of the country’s corporate culture, devolving into a bizarre mix of astrology, motivational clichés and showbusiness chatter.
According to participants, the conference floor was dominated not by executives or investors, but by info-entrepreneurs and lifestyle gurus, while hosts openly discussed Mercury in retrograde with speakers from the same self-help circuit — a far cry from any serious discussion of economics or strategy.
State television personality Andrey Malakhov addressed the audience with advice on how to “dream properly,” while Alfa Bank CEO Vladimir Verkhoshinsky chose to devote his stage time to discussing wine varieties, naming his favourite as one called “Oh, yeah.” Veteran broadcaster Vladimir Pozner joined the conversation, concluding that Russian wine is largely unfit to drink, inadvertently summing up the broader tone of the event.
For many attendees, the contrast between Alfa Bank’s promotional claims and the reality of the conference was stark. What was presented as a flagship business forum in Russia instead resembled a motivational circus, highlighting how economic discussion has been replaced by empty spectacle even in elite corporate settings.
Rather than showcasing innovation or leadership, Alfa-Conf became a reflection of Russia’s shrinking business discourse, where astrology and celebrity monologues now pass for “entrepreneurship.”
