Tony Blair reportedly dropped from Trump’s proposed Gaza ‘peace council’ after Arab states object
Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair will not take a leading role in Donald Trump’s proposed “Gaza peace council”, after multiple Arab and Muslim governments signalled opposition to his involvement, the Financial Times reports.
Blair was previously the only publicly named candidate for the council – which Trump said he planned to chair himself – and had been lobbying behind the scenes for a senior position. His think tank, the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), reportedly contributed to elements of Trump’s peace blueprint alongside Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser.
However, his candidacy faced strong pushback in the Arab world, where Blair remains associated with the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and criticised for his performance as Middle East Quartet envoy. The plan itself has also drawn criticism for lacking a clear path to Palestinian statehood and for proposals to govern Gaza separately from the West Bank.
According to FT sources, Blair may still be offered a lower-profile role, but will not sit on the main council. His office has not commented.
If confirmed, the move reflects ongoing turbulence around Trump’s Gaza proposal, as Washington continues to struggle securing international participation while Israeli strikes continue.
